Key Points

Quick
A ProxSet is a group of elements and relationships related to and created from a proximity, considered as a set.

Complete
A ProxSet is a group of elements and relationships related to a proximity, considered as a set. ProxSet is short for Proximity Set. We create ProxSets from a proximity.

Why Use ProxSets
ProxSets can allow us to focus on a specific group, or specific groups, of elements and relationships. We can then consider relationships within the ProxSet, and between ProxSets. In contrast, the Core Idea is a more unstructured or loose way of relating to and thinking about situations.

Tip
You can consider how different ProxPatterns might work with your ProxSets.

Questions

• Within the proximity, what is your current focus of interest? What is your goal? What is your interpretation? What are possible alternatives? Each of these (focus, goal, interpretation, alternative) is a ProxSet.
• How could you group some related elements in the proximity, and form a ProxSet to consider?
• If you considered a group of elements and relationships in the proximity as a ProxSet, how could or would you use it?
• How could you change your ProxSet, and in doing so change your perspective or approach?

Examples

Games
The specific group of elements and relationships related to a proximity for a game is a ProxSet. The ProxSet might include a playing area, rules, players, and specific objects. A player could have a ProxSet which included the elements just mentioned, plus his or her skills and experience.

Cooking
The specific group of elements and relationships related to a proximity for making a certain meal is a ProxSet. The ProxSet might include specific amounts and types of foods, a recipe, a kitchen with certain cooking tools, a timeframe, and a chef with certain skills and experience.

Part of a Conversation
The specific group of elements and relationships related to a proximity for a part of a conversation is a ProxSet. The ProxSet might include specific kinds of strategies, experiences, knowledge, care and attention. As the topic of conversation shifts, different ProxSets come into play.

Domains
The meaning of domain includes a specified sphere of activity or knowledge. Over time, people evolve language, things, processes and practices which define and reinforce the domain. These elements and relationships form a ProxSet. So a domain can be considered as a ProxSet. And so each of the following, and subdivisions within them, are ProxSets: science, philosophy, religion, mathematics, business, the art world, government, sports, hobbies, engineering, technology, etc.
