How can you avoid forcing elements to relate to each other?

One meaning of force is to make a way by strength, such as physical, mental, moral, or emotional strength. Another meaning of force is to make someone do something against their wishes or will, for example via coercion or compulsion. Both meanings of force often imply fewer relationships among proximate elements, and reliance on one or a few elements, which may have limits (see Limits of One). To avoid is to prevent from happening, keep away from or stop oneself from doing something. So when possible, avoiding force can prevent an overreliance on one or a few elements.

Relate Other PPs
The ProxPatterns are an integrated group of related patterns for relating to situations. By the Limits of One, any single ProxPattern has limits. In your proximity or situation, how does this ProxPattern relate to others?

1. For your situation, in the proximity generally or more specifically in ProxSets,
2. Possibly in relationship with other PPs,
3. To help with the Core Idea,
4. How can you avoid forcing elements to relate to each other?

Rather than forcing, try to involve actively in combination with other PPs.

• What relationships with an element seem forced? Stressed? Strained? Tight? Pressured? Coerced? Are these perhaps signs to change your approach?
• Is an element in danger of breaking, bursting or giving way? Can you find a way to transition smoothly instead?
• Are you or another person feeling pressured, coerced, compelled? Is there a way to relate a variety instead?
• Are you crossing a line between testing a limit and forcing some elements to relate? Is there a way to honor the integrity of the elements or relationships?
• How could you change elements or relationships to reduce forcing?
• Are you relying on one or a few elements to relate to many other elements? This might be a sign of forcing, and a trigger to reduce the reliance on that one or those few elements.
• What other ProxPatterns might alter the situation so it is less forced?

Pushing the Envelope
There is a difference between pushing the envelope and breaking the envelope. Pushing takes constant awareness of the feedback you are getting, and adjusting accordingly.

Sports and Exercise
Forcing a stretch or move can get you in trouble. The key is to stay in the "zone" or in "flow," where goals are challenging as well as rewarding and fun.

Getting a "Bigger Hammer"
With tools and technology, there is often an optimal level of force. Go beyond it, and things break.
